Ready, Set… NANOWRIMO!

by evilnymphstuff

Guys, I’m alive.

I know that my latest post is 1 month+ old, which is probably my MIA record in the blogosphere, and that the latter was a depressing short story, but I would like to let you know that I am perfectly fine… even very happy. Lately, I have simply been overwhelmed by Life, in beautiful amazing ways, and at this point, I’d say that I have never been so lucky. If I was not an atheist I would probably have thanked the Lord. But instead, I’ll just thank the universe.

Anyway, my wake-up call to blogging today was actually the realization that… I’m DOING NANOWRIMO THIS YEAR! (as you’ve guessed from the title, of course) After 2 years of no-NaNo, at last, I’m getting back at it!

If you are also participating this year and would like to be my NaNo buddy, my username is DaphLeFay and yep it’s obvious that I can’t change my username and this one totally reminds me of the ‘me’ that created this blog in the first place. XD

This time, the novel I will be writing will be different from previous years. The main reason why I have not been blogging for a month was because of my commitment in my university’s Performing Arts Club, especially as we were coming close to our big Year-End Production. And I’d say that this whole experience, which is actually my second time, although I was in a higher position this time, changed me and touched my heart like nothing else.

Thus I’d like to dedicate this year’s NaNo novel to my Performing Arts Club. My novel is called, you guess it, The Performing Arts Club.

Anyway, I know I have a lot to do now and those who are doing NaNo can relate, therefore, I’d just like to wish you all good luck!

May your pen never fail you.

The Day She Died.

by evilnymphstuff

She died the day she turned 20.

It attacked her and destroyed who she was. It stole her heart and everything that mattered. She was left lying on the ground, with only a body of air and dirt. Nevertheless, she stood up again and faced the sun. In its haste, it left a piece of her soul. She took one step at a time back to life.

But it came back for it.

At that moment, she laughed. Her body shook uncontrollably. “Take it all, take it all,” she said. Because being 20 made her realise that Life was indeed merciless. And she was left with nothing.

She was only 20, and yet, she was dead, dead in an empty bottle; still she was living, living in death. She kept on taking one step at a time, into certain nothingness. She bumped into other bodies; she met with new experiences. Life was being thrown at her but she could not return the favour.

She might as well have been a porcelain doll. She was played with, but she could not play with.

This picture was taken during our annual Monash ball 2015 at the Majestic Hotel and features a real performer, posing as a kind of statue.

A Writer’s World; A Writer’s Block

by evilnymphstuff

I always believed that writers had an imaginary world of their own, where every story, every place, every character they had ever created resided, because I do have one. J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis had one each, and now of course we would also think of George R. R. Martin’s. Mine also has a name, but not as fancy as ‘Narnia’, so I’ll skip that part. This phenomenon, I call it a writer’s world. All the characters and all the buildings or places I’ve ever invented since I was 8 still exist for me and are just waiting for my cue to jump out to the real world and onto paper.

The thing is, I’m currently having the longest writer’s block ever. I’ve written a few short stories at the start of the year but since then I didn’t open my word processor at all (except for assignments, no choice, obviously). So it’s been around 6 months (OMG half a year!) since I last put a story on paper. I rarely think about my writer’s world anymore but when I do, it looks chaotic and neglected, instead of being the little paradise I used to go to when I was in secondary school (my writing peak years) to pick and choose characters and what not.

Why I Love Anime

by evilnymphstuff

I’ve never been a big fan of anime series and I can count on my fingers how many of them I’ve watched in my whole life so far. (Haha, being an Asian has led me not to be interested in Asian stuff.)

However, I have to say, I really really admire anime.

On the rare occasions that I do watch one, I go completely crazy over it.

yoshino And the reason this happens is that anime producers/writers/whatever are simply the greatest storytellers that ever existed.

Indeed, this is a writing-related post (hihi what could you expect from me) and the answer to the ‘why I love Anime’ is simply because of its storytelling.

On Writing…

by evilnymphstuff

Another post in 2015 already, yeah! Anyway, today I just wanted to share my (perhaps overly) personal review of ‘On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft’ by Stephen King, because at the end of the day it will probably be found in my life-changing book list. Read further to see why!

This review has been published on Goodreads as well; my longest review ever written there, I believe! By the way, if you’re on Goodreads too, feel free to add my as a friend! I would be glad :) Just CLICK HERE.

Creative Writing & Me: Continued

by evilnymphstuff

(Before I officially start writing this post, I would like to disclaim that this is not a ‘part 2’ to some previous post, although the title may give this impression.)

It’s been a while since I’ve finally settled back (physically and mentally) home (Malaysia, that is) from an awesome trip to Singapore and I still have a little less than 3 months to go before school starts again. And what does An Evil Nymph usually do during long holidays?

Yes, I’m back to writing my crazy novel(s)!

Okay, as a writing recap-update:

Exactly one year ago, I rewrote what was supposed to be the last draft of a novel I have been passionately struggling with since Camp NaNoWriMo 2012. The writing flowed easily. I was content. By February-March 2014, the draft was done. I left it idle for a while because I was doing another smaller writing project (a novella) which I had intended to finish before I’d go to Malaysia for my studies. I did finish it and by that time, I was ready to hop on the plane towards my university life!

Anyway, my plan at that time was: focus on your studies and uni life first, then during the 3 months holiday, go back to the final draft and revise it. Then edit it and maybe send it to publishers? Well, now, fast forward to the present time, I did start revising it… And finally it is not as good as I expected it was. Sincerely, I think that going to Malaysia, starting a new independent life in a foreign country kind of made me grow up… including my perceptions and creativity. And when I read what I had thought to be the final draft of my dearest idea ever, I realised that I actually knew nothing (Jon Snow xD). And I would have known nothing of the world, of real life, if I had stayed at home.

I just feel that one year had made all the difference.

Therefore, I stopped revising; I was quite disappointed and discouraged, because I would have to rewrite the 103,000+ novel (again) if I intend to go along with it, and at the same time, in that particular time period, I was dealing with conflicting emotions and thoughts on career choice (read my ‘A Beautiful Mind’ post?).

But now I’m back on track! What I decided in the end was to move on: after all, my final draft was only one novel in a duology I had planned, so instead of going back to it now, I’m going to focus on the second novel of the duology. Then maybe after this one is done, I might find the right way to deal with the first one. One has to know the end to begin ;)

However, in the end… I’m currently writing that ‘second novel’, but as a stand-alone thing. With a completely different structure from the first one… And I’ll see how it goes. As long as I’m writing, I feel sane… I mean, emotionally balanced.

keep calm and write on

(Oh yeah, that’s one of my newly bought notebooks in Malaysia!)

Why Do I Want To Be A Writer?

by evilnymphstuff

This is a common question that is often asked, although very hard to answer. It’s like asking: why do you like chocolate? or why do you like that particular colour?

But I finally got an answer!! Sometimes, it’s really helpful to think WAY too much… ;)

So… why do I want to be a writer? Why did my 9-year-old self have this dream and passion and why, even after a decade, do I still have it?

I Reached 50,000 Words!

by evilnymphstuff

This is a special post to announce that I’ve got past the 50k words mark in my novel-in-progress, a novel I’ve been writing since the beginning of the year – yeah if it was NaNoWriMo I would already be past 50k well before – as those who have been following my posts this year know.

And I didn’t realise that my previous post was actually my 400th! A neat number :) This is the 401st one.

Back to the novel I’m writing, it’s actually a project I’ve challenged myself to complete before going to university in July, and being on the 50k words line, I’m halfway through! Wasn’t sure if I should write ‘only’ or ‘already’ ;) I just feel that the story will evolve till past 100k words!

It’s urban fantasy, an idea, complex and continuously expanding, which was planted into my brain since I was 13 but which only became a story in 2012 for Camp NaNoWriMo in August and which I’ve been writing and re-writing since, never coming up with a completed story. Until now. Now I feel ready to finish that 3rd attempted first draft of this novel! I’m determined :)

If any of you want to know what this obsessive novel-in-progress of mine is basically all about, you can check out this short story I made based on it, for the Create A World Writing Contest by The Dark Globe which I actually won: CLICK HERE!

Anyway, thinking of novels… I made a book haul recently on my YouTube channel! Here it is:

From Script To Novel Writing…

by evilnymphstuff

I absolutely have to update you about my writing life!!! Yes at last!

While I was busy with exams and catching up with vlogging and blogging, especially the Weekly Photo Challenge, afterwards, I also had a lot going on with my pen and paper… well, mainly with my MS Word. And it’s only now that I finally pushed away my laziness to sit down and write a post about some serious business of mine: writing.

From the title of this post, you might have an idea of my writing projects. In fact, before my exams started I spent 2-3 consecutive days at writing a whole short film script. Like, non-stop. Except for sleep.

By the way some of you who liked my facebook page (An Evil Nymph) did see a status I posted at that time telling you about that little project. So, for you it’s not the big news yet ;)

12 Tips for Proofreading and Editing Your Own Work! [Guest Post]

by evilnymphstuff

Our brains have the tendency to mess with us. How? Well, when we are proofreading any written work that we have done, we are likely to read the words in the way that we believe they should be written. This means that we are prone to misjudging our written work by missing typos, spelling mistakes and grammatical errors – including punctuation, poor choice of words and wrong sentence structures. This in turn impacts the context of the work as well as the readability.

As proofreading and editing is extremely time consuming, it is unlikely that friends and family will want to spend any of their spare time doing it. Also, hiring someone to proofread and edit can be quite expensive. Therefore, it is great to learn how to help ourselves. Continue reading to discover 12 great tips on how you can proofread and edit your own work, to a high standard.

Exercise: Improving Your Writing Skills [Guest Post]

by evilnymphstuff

Writing is a difficult and necessary task of life, no matter what your job is, you will have to do some writing at some point. Even before you get to the technical details, writing is hard enough.

Like most things, writing seems a lot less difficult if you have an idea of how to do it. This is easily done, with a workshop or a writing course. Like riding a bike, these are skills that you only need to learn once, and then get used to implementing. Most professional copywriting companies like Gaps Writing offer offers courses on how to write well, and what constitutes good writing. If you are a business owner or manager, it is particularly important.

You would never think that you could get results out of using your negative emotions for something.
