The Art Of Planning A Blog

Let me tell you that I have a blogging schedule, but that I don’t have one. Yes, I love paradoxes lately.

blogging artWhat I mean is that when I first started this blog, I had absolutely no clue where I was going with it. I posted at random, writing without being specialised in any niche, many posts a day or how often I wanted to publish something in the blogosphere during the week.

Then I started to have an audience. A small one at first of course, but for me, one faithful reader was enough for me to become a little more organised on my blog, since I’d despise myself for confusing or overwhelming any followers of mine.

Advice on Guest Posting

If you have been following me for a while you should have noticed that guest posts are becoming more and more regular in my blogging schedule.

What is guest posting?

You know, those posts which aren’t written by me, but by someone else – and at the end of the post I place a short bio to credit them? This is a guest post.

You own a blog, and you write most of the articles, then one day, a mail comes in telling you that she/he wants to write for you. Well that’s fine. Less work for me and more exposure for the person, which is then called a guest poster. (I guess)

guest blogger

Okay fine, it’s called a guest blogger.

Nano? Are you still with me?

If you have been following me on Twitter you might have noticed that… well I haven’t tweeted much these days and neither did I posted much on my blog because I had a full week of depression + exams + keeping up on NaNo.

Fortunately NaNo wasn’t that much of a problem, only that it really used up all my spare time! 😛

Anway this will be a short post…

Everyday I’m trying to write at least 2000 words instead of the usual 1667 so that you’re safer… 🙂 and also because I discovered a horrible thing about Microsoft words:

The word counter is terrible!

5 Tips to Make Your Website Appear Professional

Another blogging tip for you today! Especially for those who intend to blog or create a website dedicated for real business you know… like ProBlogger.com, About.com…

So you’ve decided to make your living out of a website? These are 5 main things I noticed with professional blogs, company blogs… and you should abide by them to be successful:

1. Keep It Simple

The design should not be extravagant. Professional can mean simple too. Don’t you notice how most of the well-known website have a white background? Your blog should not be too colourful. I’d advise you to choose a neutral colour ranging from white to black. I won’t really recommend black though… I prefer to read black on white than white on black. (Why do you think they changed blackboards to whiteboards?) If you insist on the black you can add some colour but not too much, not too complex. An example of black background but still professional: www.makeupgeek.com.

The font should be simple too. Use Verdana or other similar to that font. It is much easier to read. After all when readers get their first impression of your website (which is always visual) they should be attracted to what is being written and not be distracted by your funky designs… What you communicate through your blog is the most important! About.com is a very good example of all I’ve said so far.

2. Original Banner

Your design might be simple… but it must also be unique. It must be made by you – or your partner or any friend… Your banner, your badge should not be a picture from google. This can follow your imagination. The banner is different from your blog design. A banner can be exaggerated but depending on the subject you’re specialising into, it must perfectly fit in!

3. Advertising but not too much

When I enter a website I don’t like to see lots of advertising popping out of nowhere or preventing me from reading your stuff. I then have to search where the article begins and this is annoying. I feel lost. Therefore most of the time I just go back to google to search for another  “clean” and informative blog.

Of course, you can advertise YOUR blog on search engines, etc as much as you want. Just don’t put in lots of other advertisings in your website itself.

4. The Contact Info Tab

The reader should find it easy to contact you. A tab or notice at the end of each post or page is recommended. Be easily accessible especially if your website involves a company, jobs, services…

5. About YOU

The reader would like to know more about you before contacting you. He wants opinions, an overview on your potential. An About me/us page is crucial! And also: the article should be written IN THE 3rd PERSON! What I mean is instead of writing: “Hi my name is Daphnee (SURNAME), a professional makeup artist. I mainly work in bridal looks…” you should write: “Daphnee (SURNAME) is a professional makeup artist. Her career has mainly been devoted to bridal looks…”

Got it right? You are now ready to start your business! Good luck! 🙂

PS: Don’t mistake my blog for an example because this is NOT a professional blog! 😉

Tip: “how I can get my blog more popular?”

This was asked by one of my blogger friends – yeps contacting me for advice although I’m still a beginner lol! Her name is Autumn and click here to check out her great blog! 🙂

I did a short reply – because we were ‘chatting’ – sort of – by mail 🙂

Here’s what I answered:

Hi what did work for me is responding to comments – in any other way because google won’t allow replying 🙂 – and commenting a lot on other blogs! Give other people courage to continue writing 🙂 follow everyone of them because that doesn’t cost you a thing and because most of them deserve it and will encourage them 🙂

Hope this helps! ^^

A short tip for all of you too guys because that’s how I’m doing right now and it works great! (I have to do that on WordPress too lol but I just don’t have much time for 2 blogs 🙂 and anyway business blog comes first in the goal of getting famous!)

When I’ll get new techniques I’ll tell you ASAP!

Do You Follow Yourself?

Well, I DO. Yes it’s true, for both of my blogs. I follow/subscribe myself.

Is this a way to get another bonus follower? No not really.

What it does is that this way you can be at the same time the writer and the reader.

Got it?

No.

Alright, here’s the trick:

When you follow youself, you can see how people get your notifications about your posts, and this can make you improve. For e.g. when I first started writing a blog I wrote too many posts at the same time, and I wrote LONG posts. That’s not right at all because then I get lots of mail and when you have lots of mail I guess you just end up marking everything  as ‘read’ or simply don’t bother check your mail anymore. This will make you learn how to control yourself if ever you have this problem.

Maybe you’re not aware of your presentation mistakes, because just like a book, if the cover is nice, it is read. First impression = last impression, right?

Always try to be at your readers’ place and you’ll do the right thing.

FAQs: Request for blogging advice

Today I got my first sort of website ‘FAQs’ from a blogger here on WordPress called Hassaan Rabbani. He gave me authorisation to publish what he’d asked me:

Hi,

i stumble upon your blog today and it fascinated me a lot.. keep on writing,

i am new at wordpress, can  u suggest me something..

www.hassaanrabbani.wordpress.com

Best,

Hassaan

My reply:

Hi! I think that you’re not as new as me 😀 your blog is nice!

What I can tell you is to comment a lot on other blogs and subscribe what really interests you, and you can send messages like you just did 🙂 but search for blogs that share the passion of airplanes too 🙂

I followed your blog.

Keep on writing!! At least one post every two days or even everyday! What’s more important is the number of views, your blog stats, not the number of subscribers. But please don’t write too much posts on a single day – two or three max. – or many might unsubscribe because their inbox will be filled too quickly!

He answered:

Yeah sure why not 🙂
By the way i am really really great full to you. you are such a friendly pal

God bless you and thumbs up again 🙂

keep up the good work

best

Hassaan

For those who are new to blogging, I hope this article is helpful to you!! 😀

Click on the Contact me tab if you have any more questions! I’ll try to reply ASAP though don’t get impatient if ever I take some time because I’m going back to school tomorrow.
