4 Reasons Why Contemporary Feminists Have To Watch ‘Once Upon A Time’

The fourth season of ABC’s television series, ‘Once Upon A Time’, is upon us. If you love modern adaptations of classic fairy tales, this is the cherry on the top of the cake. As you run through each episode, try to identify all of the children’s stories the producers integrated throughout the storyline: it makes a viewer’s experience more interesting. What is also appealing in the series is the contemporary, but somehow still ideal, approach towards gender and socio-cultural issues.

  1. Equal rights in a romantic relationship

Ever dreamt of living in a world where women are the ones to ask men for a date without the fear of being considered as ‘weird’ or of humiliating the male ego? An equal compromise was maintained when the latter offered to choose the restaurant. Moreover, they are business associates, looking after each other’s backs. Besides, the fact that Emma is the town sheriff, therefore the one with higher social power, does not seem to disturb the Captain, or anyone else in Storybrooke for that matter, which leads us to the next point…

Guest Post: I Have Cancer and I Am Beautiful

I’m still in the mood ‘fight-against-cancer’ so I requested Jackie Clark (I talked about her in my World Cancer Day post) to write a guest post on cancer and beauty, which she did marvellously well on my makeup blog. By the way, it’s going to be the very first guest post of this blog! Yay!

If ever you wish to be a guest blogger here, you just have to email me on magic.daphy@gmail.com (yeah I know it’s childish but I created it when I was 11 and I don’t want to change it! :P)

So here’s what she wrote for An Evil Nymph’s blog for us today 🙂

I Have Cancer and I Am Beautiful

by Jackie Clark

You have mesothelioma cancer. You have breast cancer. You have uterine cancer.

It’s a fact.

Now comes treatment, doctors, and more prognosis than you could’ve ever imagined in one person’s life.

None of it has anything to do with the fact that you are beautiful. You are a beautiful person and you can’t forget that despite cancer your life is precious. Life is wonderful and you can make the best of every situation—cancer diagnosis or not.

You’ll need to remind yourself of this every day.  You have your loved ones-they’ll support you.  They will give you something to smile about every day, as they always have.

At the end of the day, the only person that can hold you up is you.  You need to maintain your strength, your self-respect and the positivity that will not only carry you, but those that need you.

You’re beautiful and I’ll prove it.

Go look in the mirror.

There is nothing more powerful than looking in the mirror and liking — no, loving — what you see.

Don’t like what’s looking back at you?

Let’s do something about it.

Nothing Can Steal Your Beauty – no, not even Cancer.

Yesterday was World Cancer Day, and earlier, in my makeup blog, I had the pleasure to welcome a guest blogger, Jackie Clark who wrote an article on women having cancer, to tell them that it doesn’t mean that they have to stop caring about their body, their beauty… You can read the post here: Keeping Beauty in Your Life.

Jackie writes in honour of women having mesothelioma cancer and has her own blog: The Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance Blog. You can also follow her on Twitter @CancerAlliance and believe me, her posts are worth it.

A Real Man Never Hits A Woman

They married and lived happily ever after until the end of their lives… or not? That’s where the story really begins, by their union, for weeks and months they remain in happiness, in love, pierced by Cupid’s arrow, entwined in their blood dripping from an illusion which is often called Love. Unfortunately for most women, it was indeed an illusion. A dream. And she ends up waking up one morning to realize that the man who sleeps next to her is a stranger.
It begins with a small slap, a sweet blow, a  nice reproach. Then the man becomes monster when the situation hardens into consecutive shoves, violent slaps in the face and insults that stabs the entire body. The man she thought was the One this time is actually the worst of what she might have had.
But a woman loves her husband, and when she loves, she forgives. He then apologizes with all his heart and she welcomes him back into her life. He sends her flowers and she kisses him. They again become lovers like the first time. And history repeats itself. The cycle continues…
